The Artiste & Label Service Manager for DITTO Music Africa, Hassan Beiruthy, has called on musicians and creators to register with their local Performing Rights Organisations (PROs), such as the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO).

He mentioned that such a move would protect them from potential copyright infringements while ensuring they receive their due royalties.

Speaking at the second edition of the African Music Business Dialogue and Music Showcase held at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra recently, Mr Beiruthy said there was widespread neglect of copyright registration among independent and even some mainstream artistes.

He urged musicians to take the necessary steps to safeguard their creative work and secure rightful earnings.

“Many artistes overlook this crucial aspect of their careers and, as a result, they lose out on well-deserved royalties. By registering with PROs, they can protect their intellectual property and receive proper recognition for their work,” he stated.

He also stressed the importance of artistes understanding the value of their music rights, stating, “Music is not just an art; it is a business. Artistes should treat it as such by ensuring their work is legally protected and monetised effectively.”

The event, which brought together key industry stakeholders, including Mr Carl Ampah, Programme Officer at UNESCO; H.E. Kufa E. Chinoza, Zimbabwean Ambassador to Ghana; H.E. Jeanette Njuma Nyakeru, Ambassador of Congo to Ghana, and H.E. Col. Awoki Panassa, Ambassador of Togo to Ghana, served as a platform for fruitful discussions on advancing the African music industry.

Mr Beiruthy, who is also the Country Manager of DITTO Music Africa, announced that the company has partnered with African Music Business to offer services aimed at grooming artistes and optimising the use of digital music platforms.

He emphasised that through this partnership, artistes can retain 100 per cent of their royalties while gaining global recognition.

“At DITTO Music, we are committed to empowering artistes with the right tools and knowledge. Through our partnership with African Music Business, we aim to provide artistes with industry insights, mentorship and access to global markets,” he explained.

He encouraged artistes to embrace digital distribution and professional music management to maximise their careers.

“The music industry is evolving rapidly, and those who adapt to modern trends and safeguard their rights will be the ones to thrive,” he noted.
