Former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been arrested by the police over an alleged death threat against the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The 46-year-old former boxer was arrested on Monday, August 24, 2026, by the Accra Regional Police Command following the circulation of a video on social media in which he is alleged to have threatened the life of the NSA Director-General.
In a statement issued on Monday evening, the Police confirmed the arrest and said Ayitey Powers was taken into custody to assist with investigations into the matter.
According to the Police, the arrest follows preliminary attention drawn to the social media video containing the alleged threat. Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the video and the statements attributed to the former boxer.
Ayitey Powers remains in police custody as investigators work to establish the facts of the case and determine whether any offence was committed.
The Police did not provide further details about the content of the alleged threat or what may have triggered the incident. They also did not indicate whether any charges had been filed against the former boxer as of Monday evening.
The investigation is expected to determine the authenticity and context of the video, as well as the circumstances under which the alleged threat was made.
