Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been released after the Dansoman Circuit Court discontinued proceedings against him over an alleged death threat directed at National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

Ayitey Powers appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, following a one-week remand in connection with the case.

The former boxer was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command on Monday, August 24, after a video circulating on social media allegedly showed him making threats against the life of Mr Ankrah.

His arrest came after the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) called on the police to investigate the alleged comments and ensure that appropriate legal action was taken.

According to reports, the GBIMC expressed concern over the content of the video and considered the alleged remarks serious enough to warrant police intervention.

Following his arrest, Ayitey Powers was brought before the court and remanded for one week while the matter was being pursued.

However, when he returned to court on Wednesday, the case was discontinued, paving the way for his release.

The development brings an end, for now, to the legal proceedings stemming from the controversial video, which attracted attention on social media and within Ghana’s boxing community.

Ayitey Powers is one of Ghana’s well-known boxers and has enjoyed a lengthy career in the sport, gaining recognition for his performances both locally and internationally. His outspoken personality has also made him a prominent figure beyond the boxing ring.

The case had generated interest among sports fans and stakeholders, particularly because it involved a senior official of the NSA and a former professional boxer.

With the court discontinuing the case, Ayitey Powers has now regained his freedom after spending a week on remand. It remains unclear whether any further action will be taken over the alleged comments.
