The Chairman of the Organisation Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Anthony Abayifaa Karbo, has dismissed claims that the party’s upcoming national executive elections will merely produce candidates aligned with its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
He said NPP delegates know what is good for the party at any point and that what Dr. Bawumia needs now are competent national officers who are capable of strengthening the party’s organisational structures to win the 2028 general election and not blind loyalty to him.
There has been a vile propaganda that the NPP flagbearer has endorsed some aspirants ahead of the October 3, 2026 delegates conference in Kumasi that will elect national officers, because they are his loyalists he can work with.
However, speaking in an interview with Citi News, Mr. Karbo, a strong ally of Dr. Bawumia, affirmed that the flagbearer has not endorsed any aspirant.
Quizzed if there is a “Bawumia candidate” in the elections, Mr Karbo responded, “There can’t be. There can’t be.”
Mr. Karbo who is also a member of the National Officers Election Committee reiterated that the party will elect national officers based on their competence, experience and ability to contribute to the NPP’s organisational agenda, rather than candidates whose main qualification is their perceived relationship with the flagbearer.
“What we are going to Kumasi to do is essentially to elect people who are going to see the 2028 project come to fruition,” he stressed.
Mr Karbo also rejected rumours that he is supporting and campaigning for some candidates because they are ‘”Bawumia people”.
He urged delegates to assess the capabilities of the various aspirants before casting their ballots for positions including National Chairman, National Vice Chairmen, General Secretary, National Organiser, National Women’s Organiser and National Youth Organiser.
The elected national executives will be responsible for providing strategic direction for the party, overseeing its administration and coordinating activities for the next four years as it reorganises following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election.
Mr. Karbo maintained that the internal elections should not be viewed as a contest between individuals associated with different political figures within the party.
“We are not voting for people who are close to somebody. We are voting for efficient party officers who can help deliver the project,” he emphasised.
Flagbearer already elected
Mr. Karbo pointed out that NPP’s delegates have already completed the process of electing the party’s presidential candidate for the 2028 election and must now focus on choosing executives who can work with the wider party structure to prepare for the election.
The national delegates conference forms part of the NPP’s broader internal reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general election.
The party has also been working on constitutional changes covering internal elections, leadership structures and participation in the party’s decision-making processes.
