Wa West MP, Peter Lanchene Toobu says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is deliberately orchestrating Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s failure in the 2024 general election.

According to him, the NPP is attempting to shift away from the perception that it is predominantly led by individuals of Akan descent by showcasing Dr Bawumia as the new face of the party.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Thursday, August 31, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP stated that the NPP is well aware that they will not secure victory in next year’s general elections and are ready to go to opposition.

Mr Toobu asserted that the NPP has not delivered on its promise to the Ghanaian population and that their decision to present Dr Bawumia as their flagbearer is a stratagem to mitigate the negative impression of the party’s governance should the vice president’s candidacy not succeed.

“They are looking at ‘why would we lose an election and just lose, we need to lose and gain something. Loosing, yes we will lose the election – gaining what, let’s build our party for the future so let’s push Dr Mahamudu Bawumia forward’.

“For the first time ‘we’re having a Northerner leading the NPP so he can help take away the Akan tag on the NPP that if you go and lose, it is not the fault of the party, you led the party into losing the elections’ so next time if he’s not the presidential candidate, it will be in history recorded that a Northerner led the party,” he said.

The Wa West MP expressed his belief that the NDC will emerge victorious in the 2024 general election, saying that the NPP’s chances of victory are slim.

He clarified that President Akufo-Addo-led administration has, in his view, led the country into economic stagnation throughout their eight-year tenure.

“I think sometimes I love the NPP for being strategic, they do know that as a matter of fact 2024 is a dead game, it’s a dead game. They can’t get closer to victory, never.

“No Ghanaian is thinking about NPP in 2024 for God’s sake. What at all do you want to find in NPP, what at all do you want to do again,” he stressed.

He noted that despite the Minister of Finance’s assertion of a turning point, the economy is yet to show significant improvement.

Mr Toobu therefore criticised the NPP for their handling of the economy and highlighted that the reduction of inflation from 54.1% to 43.2% is not a significant achievement given the overall economic condition.

The NDC MP maintained that the NPP has not delivered on its promises to Ghanaians and urged those considering the party as an option to confront the party and express their dissatisfaction.
