Former Vice President and the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2028 general election, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has paid a glowing tribute to the late King of Dagbon, Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II.
Dr Bawumia eulogised the late King as an exemplary ruler when he led an NPP delegation to join the Chiefs and people of Dagbon in Yendi, for the installation of the Regent of the Dagbon Kingdom, Kampakuya-Naa Yakubu Abukari.
Describing it as a momentous occasion, the former Vice President said the sacred customs and traditions of Dagbon are manifested admirably.
He recalled with fondness, his relationship with the late Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, beginning from his era as Yoo-Naa in Savelugu, to the ancient skins of Yendi, the capital of the Dagbon Kingdom.
“Our relationship was one of warmth, deep respect, and shared aspirations for the progress and development of our people,” he stated.
Dr Bawumia used the opportunity to congratulate the new Regent of Dagbon and urged him to maintain the legacy of peace and unity left behind by the late Ya-Na.
The Regent will take immediate responsibility for administering the affairs of the Dagbon Kingdom.
He will oversee the kingdom until the final funeral rites of the late Ya-Na are performed. Again, he installation paves the way for the ultimate selection and enskinment of a substantive new Overlord of Dagbon.
Thousands of sympathisers, traditional leaders and well-wishers converged on Yendi, the traditional seat of the Kingdom of Dagbon, for the installation of a Regent following the death of the Overlord, Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, on July 11, 2026.
The town has come alive with traditional drumming, the firing of ceremonial muskets and cultural displays by local warriors as mourners and dignitaries continue to arrive for the historic ceremony.
While the public activities continued, some customary rites were performed behind closed doors ahead of the official installation of the Regent.
The installation of the Regent was conducted in two phases, beginning with a private customary ceremony before the Regent was officially presented to the public.History
It formed part of Dagbon’s traditional succession process following the passing of the Ya-Na and is expected to pave the way for the kingdom’s customary transition rites.
