Former Vice President of Ghana and the 2028 Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has mourned the passing of Sheikh Saeed Abubakari Zakaria, leader of the Anbariya Sunni Community in Tamale.
The deceased reportedly died in Accra on Monday (September 8, 2026) where he was receiving medical care.
Dr Bawumia in a Facebook post said, “Indeed, to Allah we belong, and indeed, to Him we will return”.
”Yesterday, I received the sad news of the passing of Sheikh Saeed Abubakari, the leader of the Anbariya Sunni Community in Tamale.”
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) leader noted that the deceased was a towering figure in Islamic scholarship in Ghana, adding that he (Sheikh Saeed Abubakari) devoted his life to teaching, preaching, and providing moral guidance to the Anbariya community.
He emphasized as an erudite scholar in the Islamic sciences, Afa Saeed as he affectionately called championed the pursuit of knowledge and, led the transformation of the Anbariya Institute into a center of excellence.
He further extended his condolences to the bereaved family and the Anbariya Sunni community and prayed that he find lasting peaceful in Jannah.

Meanwhile, the deceased has been laid to rest at the Nyanshegu public cemetery in line with Islamic tradition.
Thousands of mourners from all walks of life including government officials and stalwarts of the NPP gathered at the Anbariya basic school Tuesday morning to perform the Janaza prayers prior to the interment.

According to Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu in Facebook post, the Anbariya leader died an hour to a planned medical evacuation to the Emirates.
”We unfortunately lost the great Afa Seidu Leader of Ambariya Sunni Group my peronal Afa and Sheik benefactor and most illustrious Leader of Islam in our times.
”He died hour before a Planned Medical evacuation to the Emirates” he wrote.
