Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticised the demolition of La Pleasure Beach, describing the facility as socially, economically, culturally and internationally significant to Ghana.
In a statement issued on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Dr Bawumia said La Beach had evolved into one of the country’s most vibrant beach resorts and had become an important source of livelihood for thousands of people, particularly the youth.
He said the beach had also hosted several international events and functions and played a significant role during the NPP government’s implementation of the Year of Return and related activities.
“It’s sad that this very significant enclave has been demolished so wantonly. It is particularly painful and surprising that even movable assets which the owners could have removed easily were destroyed in a most bizarre fashion,” he said.
Dr Bawumia said he was committed to transforming La Beach into a major tourism and economic enclave and pledged to support businesses and residents whose livelihoods depend on the beach economy.
“I am convinced that we must make La beach a major tourist and economic enclave and I pledge my commitment to the people of La especially the businesses at la beach to make that happen,” he stated.
He outlined five measures he said he would pursue to rebuild the area.
First, he pledged to rebuild the beach economy and issue leases to individual businesses operating there.
Second, he said his administration would redesign the space to meet appropriate standards while providing support to operators to improve their businesses.
He also promised to secure the space for the Labadi Beach Hotel and other major establishments while allowing them to coexist with smaller businesses that contribute to the wider beach ecosystem.
On Laboma Beach, Dr Bawumia said he would engage its owners to resolve outstanding issues, help establish their business operations and ensure compliance with the law.
He further pledged to address environmental challenges around the lagoon, including flooding and other related concerns.
“I am committed to save the thousands of jobs that beach economy supports and to improve them,” Dr Bawumia said.
