The Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament (MP) for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Mr. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has announced that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2028 general election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will soon unveil a new and improved policy package for cocoa farmers.
He said the future of the cocoa industry will be highly bright under the next NPP government led by former Vice President Dr. Bawumia as the livelihoods of the country’s hardworking cocoa producers will be improved.
Mr. Annoh-Dompreh made the announcement at Duayaw Nkwanta in the Tano North Constituency, where he joined the Tano North MP, Dr. Gideon Boako, and other Members of Parliament for the distribution of 84 motorised spraying machines to cocoa farmer associations.
The Minority Chief Whip said cocoa farmers should expect a “different and better” policy direction that responds to their concerns about producer prices, farm inputs, production costs and the overall welfare of farmers.
The announcement comes amid continuing political debate over cocoa pricing regime and the reduction in the producer price earlier in 2026.
Mr. Annoh-Dompreh has consistently argued that the concerns raised by farmers must translate into concrete policy measures rather than remain at the level of political promises.
A nationwide cocoa tour undertaken by the Minority Caucus was launched against the backdrop of the reduction in the cocoa producer price.
On February 12, 2026, the Government of President John Dramani Mahama drastically cut the producer price of cocoa from GH¢58,000 per metric tonne, or GH¢3,625 per 64kg bag to GH¢41,392 per metric tonne, or GH¢2,587 per 64kg bag for the remainder of the 2025/2026 season.
The price adjustment generated significant concern among farmers and stakeholders and became a major subject of political debate.
Mr. Annoh-Dompreh subsequently presented the Minority’s findings from the nationwide tour to Dr. Bawumia, who indicated that the concerns would feed into the development of an alternative cocoa policy.
Gideon Boako’s support for cocoa farmers
The intervention, organised by Dr. Boako, was aimed at providing farmers with equipment to make cocoa farm maintenance easier, improve productivity and support the livelihoods of cocoa-growing communities.
Dr. Boako, in reaffirming his commitment to farmers, said cocoa producers deserved the necessary tools and support to make their work more efficient and productive.
Speaking to farmers at the event, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh said the forthcoming policy announcement would be informed by concerns gathered directly from cocoa-growing communities during a nationwide engagement conducted by the Minority Caucus committee under his leadership.
He reiterated that the committee’s findings has already been presented to Dr. Bawumia, who subsequently referred the report to the NPP Policy Committee on Agriculture, Food Security and Agribusiness for technical assessment, expert consultation and the preparation of costed policy alternatives.
This followed Mr. Annoh-Dompreh’s earlier call for the NPP flagbearer to provide a credible alternative to address the difficulties confronting the cocoa sector.
The Minority Chief Whip linked the proposed policy intervention to the immediate need to support farmers with practical resources.
He commended Dr. Boako for the distribution of the spraying machines and stressed that interventions that directly improve farmers’ ability to work and increase production must form part of any serious approach to rebuilding Ghana’s cocoa sector.
For his part, Dr. Boako expressed appreciation to the clergy, Muslim leaders, traditional authorities and residents who supported the programme, reaffirming his commitment to initiatives that directly improve the livelihoods of constituents, particularly cocoa farmers.
