Former Deputy Minister for Information Ms. Fatimatu Abubakar has urged the leadership and members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to exercise restraint in airing their grievances in public over the defeat of the main opposition party in the December 2024 general election.
“What is unacceptable, and indeed harmful to our efforts to regroup, is hearing senior members of the party, including those who actively served on the 2024 campaign team—engage in reckless finger-pointing,” she decried.
Speaking on Asempa FM programme ‘Ekosiisen’, Ms Abubakar expressed disappointment with the ongoing public blame game among party members, describing it as counterproductive.
She questioned the motives behind airing grievances publicly as these acts do not help the unity of the party.
“If you move from one media platform to another to criticize the party and engage in blame games, ask yourself: what is your motive, and what do you hope to achieve?”
The former Minister emphasised that unity was key to the NPP’s recovery, reminding members that success depends on collective effort. “Heroes are not made from lamenting or criticizing but from leading the charge to rebuild. We rise together, and we fall together. But rise we must—and we shall,” she indicated.
Acknowledging the frustrations that come with any electoral defeat, the former Information Minister underscored the importance of addressing such concerns internally.
“If you truly love the NPP, you will cover it when you see it naked, fix it when it is broken, and lift it up when it is down,” she indicated.
Ms Abubakar admonished party leaders to avoid the use of media platforms and social media to criticize the party’s internal issues. She emphasised that such actions could lead to mistrust and disunity. “Throwing accusations around publicly serves only one negative purpose: it breeds mistrust. What if those accused decide to respond? Where will that take us?” she questioned.
In the wake of the party’s defeat, the NPP’s National Council has established a fact-finding committee chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye.
The committee is tasked with investigating the reasons behind the loss and proposing strategies to reposition the party for victory in 2028.
Need to support the committee
Ms. Abubakar called on all party members to support this initiative instead of undermining it through divisive rhetoric.
“We must focus on reflection, regrouping, and capturing power as soon as possible. How we go about it, however, matters greatly,” she said.
