The campaign team of Hon. Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has issued a press statement seeking to counter claims circulating in the New Patriotic Party’s national chairmanship contest, particularly allegations that some individuals are presenting collective party achievements as personal successes and suggestions of a rift between Agyarko and the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

In a statement dated August 30, 2026, and signed by campaign spokesperson Vincent Frimpong Manu, Esq., the team said it would not engage in personal attacks against any member of the party as the contest intensifies.

According to the statement, Agyarko has directed his supporters and campaign team to focus on issues rather than personalities.

“We will not respond with attacks on any fellow party member. Every candidate in this race has given years to the New Patriotic Party, and after October 3rd, we will need all of them,” Agyarko was quoted as saying.

The campaign said the statement was necessary to place what it described as the facts of Agyarko’s record before delegates ahead of the October 3 contest.

Long Record of Service

The statement highlighted Agyarko’s decades-long involvement in the New Patriotic Party, tracing his contribution to the party back to its formation in 1992.

According to the campaign, Agyarko was a founding member of the NPP and played an active role in mobilising support for the party abroad during its early years.

He chaired the Danquah-Busia Club of North America and later served as the party’s North America Coordinator during what the campaign described as difficult periods in the party’s development.

Between 1993 and 1998, Agyarko also wrote the “Letter from America” column in The Statesman, contributing to political discourse and advocacy associated with the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition.

The campaign further noted that Agyarko served as National Campaign Manager for the NPP during the 2012 general election, where he was involved in organisational and policy rebuilding following the party’s defeat in the 2008 presidential election.

He later served as Policy Adviser to the party’s presidential candidate during the 2016 election campaign.

Professional and Government Experience

Beyond his political activities, the statement highlighted Agyarko’s extensive professional experience in the financial sector.

According to the campaign, he spent more than two decades working at the Bank of New York, where he rose through the ranks to become Vice President and Head of Global Investment Management.

Agyarko later entered government and served as Ghana’s Minister for Energy.

The campaign argued that his combination of political, professional and government experience makes him well-positioned to lead the party as National Chairman.

It also pointed to his role in the Constituency Adoption arrangement during the 2012 campaign, describing the initiative as an important structural intervention that helped transform goodwill from the Ghanaian diaspora into organised support for constituencies.

According to the statement, the arrangement was designed to create structures that would outlast a single election cycle.

‘No Rift’ with Bawumia

Responding to claims of tension between Agyarko and the NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the campaign dismissed suggestions that the two leaders were at odds.

The statement said Agyarko has consistently maintained that the roles of the party’s Flagbearer and National Chairman are distinct and complementary.

“The Flagbearer leads the campaign and carries the political message. The Chairman builds and runs the machine that delivers it to every polling station. Dr. Bawumia has his full support,” the statement said.

The campaign stressed that Agyarko has no intention of interfering with the Flagbearer’s role and would instead focus on strengthening the party’s organisational machinery.

According to the statement, his vision is to build an efficient party structure capable of supporting the Flagbearer and delivering victory at every polling station across the country.

‘Not Seeking a Stepping Stone’

The campaign also rejected suggestions that Agyarko’s bid for the national chairmanship was motivated by personal political ambition.

It said he is not seeking the position as a stepping stone to contest any future national election and is not indebted to any particular camp within the party.

According to the campaign, this independence would enable him to serve as a fair and neutral leader capable of bringing together the various traditions, factions and interests within the NPP.

The statement argued that such neutrality would be particularly important as the party works to reconcile members and delegates who supported different candidates during the January presidential primary.

The campaign said Agyarko would be able to act as a “fair referee” and help unite the party ahead of future national elections.

Delegates to Decide

The statement concluded by saying Agyarko would, in a separate release, present his detailed plan for rebuilding and strengthening the New Patriotic Party.

The campaign said the decision on who becomes National Chairman ultimately rests with party delegates and should be based on an assessment of the candidates’ records and proposals.

“Delegates will decide on October 3rd. They are entitled to decide on the facts,” the statement concluded.
