Aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Boakye Agyarko has issued a commemorative message marking the 48th anniversary of the death of Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia, the former Prime Minister of Ghana and a foundational figure of the party’s ideology.
In the statement released to coincide with the anniversary, Agyarko paid tribute to Busia as “a profound scholar-statesman and a bedrock of our democratic tradition.”
He noted that the late leader’s philosophy of “Development in Freedom” continues to serve as the guiding principle of the New Patriotic Party nearly five decades after his passing.
Agyarko highlighted Busia’s commitment to human dignity, individual enterprise, and social responsibility, describing these values as the foundation upon which the NPP was built.
He called on party members and Ghanaians to move beyond mere remembrance of Busia’s words and instead actively live out his ideals.
“As inheritors of this noble tradition, we must do more than just remember his words; we must live his ideals. We must rededicate ourselves to building a disciplined and prosperous party where every Ghanaian has the opportunity to thrive,” the message stated.
Agyarko concluded by expressing hope that Busia’s enduring legacy would continue to guide the party and the nation toward a brighter future, adding the traditional farewell: “Rest in perfect peace, Prof.”
Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia, who served as Prime Minister of Ghana’s Second Republic from 1969 to 1972, died on 28 August 1978. His intellectual contributions and political vision remain central to the NPP’s identity, with the party’s motto “Development in Freedom” drawn directly from his philosophy.
Boakye Agyarko, a former Energy Minister and long-standing party figure, is currently contesting for the position of NPP National Chairman ahead of the party’s internal elections. His tribute comes as the party reflects on its roots while preparing for the 2028 general elections.
