Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko has vowed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not be intimidated by what he described as attempts by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to target and intimidate members of the opposition.
Speaking about the political atmosphere ahead of the 2028 general elections, Mr Agyarko said the NPP would remain firm and resist any attempts to create fear among its members.
“We are not going to sit down to be bullied. Already NDC has started attacking our people, trying to intimidate everybody. Even a lawyer who is going to defend a client, they are trying to arrest.
“When did you hear of this in this country? They want to send a signal of fear to us now that 2028 we better run. We are not going anywhere. We are standing our ground.
“Never again will this party be intimidated,” he said.
Mr Agyarko also recalled an incident involving Alaji Bawa, saying the case illustrated the kind of political intimidation and violence he did not want to see repeated.
“I remember the case of Alaji Bawa, now in Kumu, where his wife was butchered and had to be flown to 37 Military Hospital for treatment. So that never recovered.
“Those things will be banished from our side. We are not running anywhere. We will stand our ground,” he added.
He stressed that the NPP would not be the party to initiate confrontation but warned that it would respond if provoked.
“We will not start anything. But anyone who brings a den will realise that we will not be intimidated. That is the assurance I want to give,” Mr Agyarko said.
Agyarko’s comments come ahead of the NPP’s October 3 national executive elections, where four candidates—John Boadu, Sammy Crabbe, Paul Afoko and Boakye Agyarko—are contesting the National Chairman position.
Agyarko is fourth on the ballot paper.
Boakye Agyarko tops in 13 regions with 51.81%
A nationwide survey projected Agyarko as the leading candidate in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairmanship race.
The survey, conducted by Ghana Watch Initiative International (GWII) between 1 and 12 September 2026, indicated that Mr. Agyarko leads in 13 out of the 16 regions of the country and commands an absolute majority of support among sampled executives in all the 276 constituencies.
It also revealed that Mr. Agyarko entered the race with the strongest national support, the broadest regional footprint and a potential first-ballot advantage.
Overall, the survey put the former Energy Minister at 51.81%, placing him ahead of former NPP General Secretary John Boadu, who recorded 32.32%.
Former NPP National Chairman Mr Paul Afoko followed with 12.39%, while former NPP First Vice Chairman Sammy Crabbe polled 3.48%.
According to the final edition of the report, the survey sampled 2,098 respondents from the constituency executive structure.
The researchers led by Seth Adu-Adjei said this represented 40% of the constituency baseline of 5,244 and 29.30% of the official statutory delegate population of 7,160.
Agyarko: My focus is 2028 for Bawumia
Agyarko said his immediate focus is to reorganise the NPP and help former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia win the 2028 presidential election.
Speaking to party supporters, the astute politician said he had little reason to pursue a political ambition that extends beyond 2028.
“If I cause Dr. Bawumia to lose 2028 and in the unlikely event that NDC loses 2032, the next is not 2036, it’s 2037. Add that to my age and ask yourself whether it makes sense for me to come and contest in that 2037 to become president of Ghana,” he said.
He questioned what personal benefit he would derive from undermining Dr Bawumia’s presidential bid.
“If I let Dr. Bawumia miss this golden chance, do I automatically become president? So what is my game? What do I get out of it? I have been in opposition for a long time,” he said.
“I need power and I need it now.”
Agyarko said his principal objective as National Chairman would be to strengthen the NPP’s structures and position the party to win the 2028 elections.
“2028 for me is the watermark. We have to win, or we have to win,” he said.
He urged delegates to give him the mandate at the October 3 election to reorganise the party and build a stronger organisation capable of supporting Dr Bawumia’s campaign.
