In a ceremony held on October 10, 2025, Paul Chen, a Chinese national living in Kumasi, officially joined the ranks of Ghana’s legal fraternity when he was called to the Ghana Bar.

The Chinese national identified as Paul Chen, and his achievement has captured public interest, not only for his unique journey but also for what it represents in terms of integration, multicultural identity, and professional aspiration.

From Business to Bar

Chen’s path to becoming a lawyer was not traditional. Prior to his legal training, he had established himself as a businessman in Kumasi.

It was his belief that legal knowledge would complement and strengthen his business endeavours in Ghana that motivated him to pursue law.

He completed the required two years at the Ghana School of Law—a period he described as difficult but rewarding. It was made manageable by the support he received from lecturers and judges with whom he interned.

The call to the Bar ceremony

On the day of the graduating class’ Bar-swearing ceremony, Chen was among 824 new lawyers formally certified to practise in Ghana.

The Acting Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, presided over the event, swearing in the new lawyers and formally handing over their qualifying certificates.

The audience included families, friends, lecturers, and legal mentors who witnessed the momentous occasion.

A symbol of diversity and aspiration

Chen’s achievement has been hailed by many as inspirational. He becomes one of the few Chinese nationals to cross the threshold into Ghana’s legal profession—a milestone seen as breaking barriers, blending cultures, and showcasing that with dedication and the right support, remarkable transitions are possible.

In interviews, Paul Chen expressed his gratitude to those who guided him along the way—lecturers, judges, and peers—acknowledging that without their help, the journey would have been much harder.

Paul Chen’s call to the Ghana Bar is a milestone not only for him personally but also for what it represents in modern Ghana: the fusion of global identities, the opportunities offered by legal education, and the growing inclusivity of professional spaces.

His journey underscores that with perseverance, strong support networks, and a clear purpose, transforming one’s life trajectory is possible—no matter one’s origin.
