Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his illustrious 23-year career with the national team.
The 41-year-old forward made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through a video message shared on his social media platforms, confirming that he would be handing back Portugal’s iconic number seven shirt after the November international break.
In his emotional message, Ronaldo described the decision as difficult, acknowledging the privilege and responsibility of representing his country for more than two decades.
“To the Portuguese people, the day has come for me to hand back the number seven shirt of our national team,” he said.
“I never felt it belonged to me alone, but for 23 years I had the privilege and the responsibility of wearing it, defending it and carrying it with me into stadiums all around the world.”
Ronaldo made his senior debut for Portugal in August 2003 and went on to become the country’s most decorated player, recording a world-record 234 international appearances and scoring 146 goals.
His greatest achievement with the national team came in 2016 when he captained Portugal to its first European Championship title, defeating France 1-0 in the final. He also helped the country win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward also made history by scoring at six FIFA World Cup tournaments, including the 2026 edition.
His international career, however, has not been without controversy. His retirement announcement follows a reported disagreement with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus after Ronaldo was left out of the starting line-up for a Nations League fixture.
Despite ending his international career, Ronaldo is expected to continue playing club football with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.
The Portuguese Football Federation has expressed gratitude for his contribution to the national team and indicated plans to organise a special tribute in his honour.
Ronaldo’s departure marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in international football, leaving behind records that have established him as one of the greatest players in the history of the game.
