The Mion District Security Committee (DISEC) in collaboration with the Paramount Chief of Mion, Naa Mahamadu Abdulai III, will tomorrow Sunday, 14th November, 2021, hold a durbar to sensitize residents in the district on peace and unity.

This follows the recent social media contents instigating conflict between Dagombas and Konkombas in the northern region.

The District Chief Executive for the area, Samuel Mahama confirmed this to THE CUSTODIAN in an interview. He said the durbar will take place at the forecourt of the Mionlana palace in the afternoon.

All Divisional Chiefs, leadership of the Konkomba Youth Association (KOYA) and the Dagbon Forum, youth wings of the two major ethnic tribes in the region are expected to be in attendance.

“Basically, we want to talk about peace and unity because currently there is social media speculation that on issue of insecurity and we want to erase that from people’s minds. So that they also speak to each other at their various work places – so that the development that we expect will also come” he indicated.

The Minister for Defense, Dominic Nitiwul, earlier this week paid a working visit to the Gbewa palace in Yendi to give an assurance to the Dagbon Overlord, Ya Na Abukari II, that the government will go after those mongering war and calling on Konkombas and Dagombas to pickup arms to fight each other.

He said neither Dagombas nor Konkombas wants to go to war in the 21st century and therefore tasked the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare to investigate and fish out the perpetrators.

The Minister further charged the metropolitan, municipal and district Chief Executives to call emergency security committee meetings at their respective areas and embark on public education to dymestify the rumors of war between the two ethnic groups.

Dominic Nitiwul who is also the Member of Parliament for the Bimbila constituency in the northern region urged the Ya Na to direct all Paramount, Divisional and Village Chiefs to carry out series of sensitization at the local levels to preach peace among the subjects.

He noted the government will not countenance the impunity perpetuated on the digital media space and promised the Dagbon King that the needed resources was going to be provided to assist them undertake a peace crusade.

“Some unguided, unscrupulous, misguided, untamed and uncultured young men decided that they will go on Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp to record – I have over 30 of such recordings, saying that they will create confusion between Konkombas, Nanumbas and Dagombas in 21st century? Originally, we thought as a government that this was just some Facebook thing but today as we progressed over the past two or three days, we realized this was more serious than we thought and I’m happy the Overlord himself has asserted to that”

“We want the media to tell our story that we will go after those warmongers, wherever they’re and fish them out. The government has given the IGP the order to fish out all those mongering the war and the conflict – going on social media [Facebook] and wherever they find themselves and arrest them one by one and prosecute them” the Defense Minister strongly stated.
