Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu, officially unveiled his bid for the National Chairmanship of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during a high-profile launch and media engagement in Accra.
A soft-spoken political leader known for prioritizing diligent, behind-the-scenes service over personal acclaim, addressing journalists, party delegates, and youth wings, outlined a vision anchored on three central pillars: Restoration, Renewal, and Reset.
The veteran public administrator and NDC founding member emphasized that this tripartite agenda is deeply rooted in the party’s foundational philosophy of Probity, Accountability, and Social Justice.
Delivering a passionate declaration, Dr. Opong-Fosu urged the party to build an inclusive structure where every member feels valued, asserting: “Until everyone counts, no one counts. Everybody counts in the party, and everyone counts in the country. Everyone must have dignity, everyone must have a voice.”
In a strong call for structural reform and internal harmony, he urged the party to move away from personality-driven dynamics in favor of institutional resilience.
“We must shift away from faction-driven policies that threaten internal unity and cohesion towards a system-driven political organisation,”
Dr. Opong-Fosu stressed. “Individuals will come and go, Executives will change, but the NDC must endure.”
The launch drew warm expressions of solidarity from the party’s student and youth bases. Representatives of the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN), the NDC’s student wing, praised Dr. Opong-Fosu is an approachable listener who has consistently advocated for student welfare and the overall fortunes of the party.
Similarly, the Volta Region Student Association of Ghana at the Ghana Communication Technology University (VORSAG-GCTU), where Dr. Opong-Fosu serves as External Patron, commended his dedication to mentorship, quoting: “Leadership is not measured by the position people occupy, but by the people leaders develop and nurture.”
Dr. Opong-Fosu’s campaign draws upon more than three decades of public governance experience. Having begun his service during the PNDC era as a District Secretary and District Chief Executive, his administrative trajectory includes key leadership roles as Deputy Minister of Local Government, Member of Parliament for Amenfi East, and Minister for Local Government and Rural Development under President John Dramani Mahama. He also served as Minister of State for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and currently chairs the Board of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC).
Beyond national governance, Dr. Opong-Fosu brings strategic expertise as Chair of the Africa Global Emergence Center and President of Africa Growth Solutions.
