The Electoral Commission is set to organize the bye-election for the Kumawu constituency in the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. The seat became vacant following the untimely death of the Member of Parliament for the area, Mr. Philip Basoah.

The lawmaker died on Monday, March 27, at the Korle Bu Teaching where he was on admission. He died at age 54.

The elections governing body in a statement signed by the Chairperson, Madam Jean Mensah, today Monday (April 17, 2023) said in accordance with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution, as amended, the Electoral Commission will hold a By-Election in the Constituency on Tuesday, the 23rd of May, 2023.

“Accordingly, the Commission will receive Nominations from prospective Candidates for the Election of a Member of Parliament for the said Constituency. The Nominations will be received at the Sekyere Kumawu District Office of the Commission from 2nd May, 2023 to 5th May, 2022 between the hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on each day” she added.

The EC has also announced that the filling fee for the election is Ten thousand Ghana cedis (GHS10,000.00) for each prospective candidate.

Meanwhile, six Parliamentary Aspirants have already expressed interest to ran on the ticket of the governing New Patriotic Party for the Kumawu seat.
