In a significant political shift, former two-term Member of Parliament (MP) for Lower West Akim on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gifty Klenam, has joined the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Klenam, who served as an MP during the Fourth and Fifth Parliaments of the Fourth Republic, later held the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export Promotion Centre (GEPC) under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, made her move public yesterday January 30, 2025.

She revealed her defection after receiving her NDC membership card in the Anlo Constituency of the Volta Region, signalling a fresh chapter in her political career.

In a statement to the press, Klenam explained her decision, citing ideological alignment and confidence in the NDC’s policy direction as primary factors.

“Upon consultation with my family, I decided to join the NDC because it aligns with my values and vision for mother Ghana,” she stated.

Klenam also expressed strong confidence in the NDC’s 2024 manifesto, describing it as the most promising blueprint for Ghana’s future development.

After thoroughly reviewing the party’s policies, she believes that former President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership will lead the country toward progress and prosperity.

In her remarks, Klenam emphasized her commitment to working closely with the NDC’s grassroots, empowering local communities, and creating opportunities to prevent the mass migration of Ghanaian youth seeking better prospects abroad.

It would be called Klenam had earlier left the NPP to follow the Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, who incidentally also left the same party to form his Movement for Change for the 2024 general election.

Alan eventually contest the election and obtained about 32,000 votes, representing 0.22%.
