The Ministry of the Interior has urged the public to exercise extreme caution following heavy rains that triggered flooding in several parts of the country on Sunday morning.
In a public safety advisory issued on June 29, the Ministry advised residents to remain in safe locations until conditions improve, warning against unnecessary movement as floodwaters continue to pose risks to lives and property.
According to the Ministry, people who are safely at home should stay indoors, while those at their workplaces or other secure locations are encouraged to remain there until it is safe to travel.
The advisory also warned motorists and pedestrians against attempting to drive or walk through flooded roads, bridges, or waterways, noting that floodwaters can rise rapidly and become life-threatening.
To support ongoing emergency operations, the Ministry said the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Ghana Armed Forces, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and other emergency response agencies have been deployed to monitor the situation, assist affected persons, manage traffic, and carry out rescue operations where necessary.
Residents in flood-prone communities have been advised to move to higher ground where it is safe to do so and to report emergencies or persons in distress to the nearest security agency or emergency response service.
The Ministry further urged the public to remain calm, cooperate with security and emergency personnel, and rely only on official channels for updates on the evolving situation.
For emergency assistance, the Ministry advised the public to contact the Ghana Police Service on 18555 or 112, the Ghana National Fire Service on 192, or NADMO through 112.
“The safety and well-being of the public remain the Government’s highest priority,” the Ministry said, adding that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide further updates as necessary.
The statement, signed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, also expressed concern for those affected by the flooding and assured the public that every effort is being made to provide the necessary assistance and safeguard lives.
