The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed concern over the conviction and sentencing of Mr. Larry Alans Dogbey, Managing Editor of The Herald Newspaper and its online platform, theheraldghana.com, following proceedings at the Accra High Court.
Mr. Dogbey was sentenced to seven days imprisonment for contempt of court by Justice Isaac Addo. The ruling relates to a publication connected to an ongoing legal dispute involving businessman Kevin Okyere and Petraco SA.
In its official statement, the GJA described the development as unfortunate and indicated that it is closely monitoring the situation. The Association emphasised that it is actively engaging its legal team to determine the most appropriate response in line with its mandate to protect press freedom and safeguard the welfare of journalists in Ghana.
While consultations continue, the GJA has called on media practitioners and the general public to remain calm and exercise restraint in their commentary on the matter. It further urged stakeholders to be measured in their discussions and to allow due legal processes to unfold without undue interference.
The Association assured its members and the public that it will communicate its formal position and any subsequent actions in due course.
In the meantime, the GJA reaffirmed its solidarity with Mr. Dogbe during this period, stressing its continued commitment to defending media freedom, promoting responsible journalism, and protecting the rights and welfare of journalists across the country.
