The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has stepped in with timely financial support to help save the life of a 10-year-old girl battling a serious brain condition, offering renewed hope to her family after weeks of uncertainty and distress.
Young Regina Agyeiwaa is currently receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where she has been diagnosed with a posterior fossa tumour, a life-threatening condition located at the base of the brain that often requires urgent and highly specialised surgical intervention.
The cost of treatment, however, had placed an overwhelming burden on her family, who struggled to raise the required funds.
In response to a formal appeal for assistance, GoldBod moved swiftly to assess the situation and provided support through its Special Intervention Programme.
On April 14, 2026, a delegation from the Board, led by the Head of the Special Intervention Programme Unit, Mrs. Gloria Precious Ankomah, presented a cheque for GH¢86,454.00 to cover the cost of Regina’s treatment.
The amount is expected to fully fund two critical surgical procedures deemed necessary by medical specialists overseeing her care.
She said “Just a few months in operation, GoldBod has undergone over 75 social interventions, and this is. A very commendable achievement. Under our health interventions, we supported individuals to undergo medical surgeries both within and outside Ghana, which include adults, children as young as six years old.”

Doctors at Korle Bu have indicated that these surgeries are essential to improving Regina’s chances of recovery and restoring her health.
The appeal for assistance was initiated by Regina’s uncle, Mr. Edward Kwasi Krupah, who formally reached out to GoldBod after the family exhausted all available means of raising funds.
According to him, the financial demands of the treatment had pushed the family to the brink, leaving them with little hope of securing the care Regina urgently needed.
Dr Patrick Bankah, Neurosurgeon, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital adding his voice to the treatment and support from GoldBod to the patient.
“She actually came in extremis.
She came critically ill. She has a tumour at the back of the head. And because of the presence of this brain tumour at the back of the head, water wasn’t leaving the head satisfactorily.
She had had initial surgery where a tube is put in the spaces in the brain that contain the water for it to drain, to reduce the pressure in the head,” he added.
Following internal review and verification processes, GoldBod approved the request, demonstrating its commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals facing critical health challenges.
The Board’s intervention has not only eased the financial strain on the family but has also ensured that Regina can proceed with her surgeries without further delay.
Receiving the cheque on behalf of the family, Regina’s mother, Madam Grace Ahenkorah, expressed profound gratitude to GoldBod for what she described as a life-saving intervention.
She recounted the family’s desperate efforts to seek assistance from various sources, noting that while many doors had been knocked on, it was ultimately GoldBod that answered their call in their moment of greatest need.
Her sentiments were echoed by Regina’s uncle, Mr. Edward Kwasi Krupah, who described the support as a turning point for the family.
He noted that prior to GoldBod’s intervention, hope had been fading fast, as the urgency of the situation grew and resources remained out of reach.
Officials from Korle Bu Teaching Hospital were present to receive the donation and facilitate the next steps in Regina’s treatment.
Among them were Dr. Mawuli Ametepe, alongside Chief Nursing Officer of the Surgery Department, Madam Felicia Ahiahonu, and the department’s Matron, Madam Elsie Sandra Foli.

GoldBod commended
Speaking after the presentation, Dr. Ametepe commended GoldBod for its compassion and responsiveness.
He explained that Regina’s condition requires two separate but closely managed surgical procedures, emphasising the importance of timely intervention in such cases.
With the funding now secured, he expressed confidence that the medical team can proceed without interruption and provide the care necessary for a positive outcome.
The donation forms part of GoldBod’s broader efforts under its Special Intervention Programme, an initiative designed to provide support to individuals and communities facing urgent needs, particularly in the areas of healthcare and education.
Through this programme, the Board has consistently extended assistance to Ghanaians in distress, helping to bridge critical gaps where access to essential services is limited by financial constraints.
While GoldBod’s primary mandate lies within the management and regulation of Ghana’s gold resources, the institution has increasingly demonstrated a strong commitment to social responsibility.

Its interventions in cases such as Regina’s highlight a growing recognition of the role that public institutions can play in supporting vulnerable populations beyond their core operational focus.
For Regina and her family, the support represents more than just financial relief—it is a second chance.
With the surgeries now within reach, there is renewed optimism that she will overcome her condition and return to a normal, healthy childhood.
As preparations begin for the procedures, the family remains hopeful and deeply appreciative, holding on to the belief that this timely intervention will mark the beginning of Regina’s recovery journey.
