Mr. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Minister for Information

The Ministry of Information has condemned the assault on Dagbon FM Broadcast Journalist in Tamale in the northern region. Accordingly, the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, in a telephone conversation with the victim, Sadiq Abubakari Gariba, has offered the support of government if he will require any.

The Ministry in a statement said attacks on Journalists should not be countenanced and urged the Ghana Police Service and relevant agencies to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators.

“The Ministry of Information has noted with concern reports of assault on a journalist at Dagbon FM in Tamale. The Ministry condemns the act and urges the Ghana Police Service and relevant agencies to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators.”

Mr. Nkrumah noted severe and speedy response from the law enforcement agencies is necessary to prevent copy-cat acts and maintain Ghana’s status in upholding press freedom.

Background

The Dagbon FM presenter was attacked by a former Deputy Northern Regional Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress, Iddrisu Hardi Pagazaa, who presently is a campaign coordinator for the Member of Parliament of Sagnarigu, A.B.A Fuseini.

The incident coincided with the celebration of this year’s International Press Freedom Day on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. A video which has since gone viral captured the outspoken communicator and one other body-built person physically abusing the presenter on live radio.
