The Minister for Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has announced the lifting of the curfew imposed on the Karaga district in the Northern Region with immediate effect.
The decision was taken on the advice of the National Security Council following a significant improvement in the security situation in the area.
The Interior Ministry in a press statement dated Thursday (April 30, 2026) said: “The Minister for the Interior, on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument, has lifted Curfew imposed on Karaga Township and its environs in the Karaga District of the Northern Region with immediate effect following a significant improvement in the security situation in the area.”
The statement further admonished the people including the Chiefs, opinion leaders and the youth to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them, as well as to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace in the area.
On April 15, 2026, the Government declared a 6:00pm to 6:00am curfew on the Karaga township and it’s environs due to growing chieftaincy disturbances in the area.
Similarly, the government also imposed curfew in about 12 communities in the Gushegu municipality due to land and chieftaincy disputes.
Subsequently, the curfew hours in these two districts were reviewed to 8:00pm to 4:00am following an appeal to mitigate the impact on the socioeconomic livelihood of the inhabitants.
Meanwhile, a total ban on all persons in the Karaga Township and its environs from carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive objects/ weapons remains enforced.
Mr. Muntaka indicated that any persons found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.
