The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed claims that efforts are underway to bring former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko into the party’s national leadership as part of a plot to frustrate the presidential ambitions of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and pave the way for former Food and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong to contest the party’s presidential election in 2032.
The denial was contained in a statement issued by NPP spokesperson Pius Enam Hadzide in response to comments attributed to Benjamin Gyewu-Appiah on pro-NDC Onua TV.
According to Hadzide, the allegation is “reckless, divisive and completely untrue,” arguing that attempts to demonstrate loyalty to Dr Bawumia through speculation and attacks on other members of the party could damage the NPP rather than strengthen it.
He said the party’s attention should instead be directed towards rebuilding its structures, maintaining unity among its supporters and preparing for the 2028 general election.
“The NPP’s 2028 presidential contest was settled on 31 January 2026,” Hadzide said, stressing that the party’s immediate priority should be winning the 2028 presidential election and securing a parliamentary majority.
He urged party leaders, communicators and activists to avoid internal disagreements and concentrate on efforts that would help the NPP regain power.
Bryan Acheampong backs Bawumia for 2028
Hadzide further clarified that Bryan Acheampong remains committed to the NPP’s 2028 campaign and to supporting Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party seeks to return to government.
He rejected suggestions that Acheampong is positioning himself for a future presidential contest or is involved in any strategy to undermine Bawumia.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Hon. Bryan Acheampong remains fully committed to the NPP’s 2028 project and to supporting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the Party’s effort to return to government,” the statement said.
According to the spokesperson, Acheampong has no interest in engaging in what he described as premature succession politics.
Hadzide also called on party members who genuinely support Bawumia to demonstrate that commitment through constructive political activity rather than personal attacks or unsubstantiated claims about the ambitions of other NPP figures.
Call for unity within NPP
The latest statement comes amid discussions within the NPP over its future direction and the need to consolidate the party ahead of the 2028 elections.
Hadzide cautioned that internal mudslinging could undermine the party’s efforts to rebuild after its electoral setbacks and prepare for the next general election.
He urged party stakeholders to prioritise unity, discipline and a shared electoral objective.
“The NPP needs unity, discipline and focus—not internal mudslinging,” he said.
The spokesperson’s comments seek to draw a clear line between the party’s current electoral priorities and speculation about future leadership contests, insisting that the immediate task for NPP members is to rally behind the party’s 2028 campaign.
