Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has reiterated that Ghana’s transformation is hinged on innovative ideas rather than the personal wealth of the country’s leaders or the amount of money the government has in the national kitty.
“It is not the money in your pocket that will allow you to transform Ghana. It is the ideas in your head,” the former vice president emphasised.
Dr Bawumia stated these when he addressed some NPP supporters in Ketu South constituency in the Volta Region ahead of the party’s presidential primary on 31st January, 2026.
He highlighted what he described as key achievements driven by innovation during his tenure as Vice President.
Dr Bawumia noted that when the erstwhile NPP administration assumed office, the Ghana Card had not yet been issued to the public.
Consequently, he was tasked with providing oversight and collaborating with the National Identification Authority (NIA) to ensure the rollout of the cards.
“We issued the Ghana Card, and Ghana today is one of the few countries in the world with a digital national ID of this kind,” he stated.
Dr Bawumia also pointed to major reforms in the country’s mobile money sector.
He recalled that before these reforms, users could not transfer funds across networks or move money between bank accounts and mobile wallets.
“I said it was possible for us to do it in Ghana, and we have done it,” he stressed.
Dr Bawumia explained that mobile money interoperability has transformed the way Ghanaians use digital financial services.
The system, the former Vice President pointed out, now allows users to renew National Health Insurance, pay electricity and water bills, and even receive international transfers directly onto their mobile money accounts.
Ghana, he noted, is the only African country offering such a comprehensive mobile money platform.
Dr Bawumia also cited the growth of mobile money operations as a major source of employment.
“When we came, the MoMo agents were 107,000. Now they are 900,000. We have created 800,000 jobs for MoMo agents,” he said.
The former Vice President urged Ghanaians to judge him based on his performance and the systems he has helped build, reiterating that development hinges on creativity, not cash.
Dr Bawumia told supporters that if he could deliver such initiatives without the full executive authority of the presidency, he could achieve even more if elected as President.
“You have seen what I can do as Vice President without the power. If you make me president, I will bring ‘Abrokyire’ to Ghana,” he declared.
Dr Bawumia promised to make Ghana a place with opportunities comparable to those abroad.
Volta region tour
Dr Bawumia completed his campaign tour of the Volta Region on Friday, with fruitful engagements in Ketu South, Keta and Anlo Constituencies, which continued with the warm reception and declaration of support he has received from NPP patriots across the region.
The NPP presidential hopeful commended party delegates for giving him a warm reception.
“I deeply appreciate your passion and dedication to the growth of our party. I also thank you all for the love and kind words, as well as your commitment to continue on this ‘journey to victory’ with me.
“Let’s keep working together for victory in January, to build a stronger and more inclusive party for victory in 2028,” Dr Bawumia posted on his Facebook timeline.
Regions toured so far
Dr Bawumia has so far toured seven regions, receiving overwhelming support from NPP delegates.
The regions are Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Western North, Western, Oti and Volta.
