The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument, has announced the review of curfew hours on Karaga and its environs from 8:00pm to 4:00am.
The Government last week imposed curfew on the Karaga and Gushegu municipalities from 6:00pm to 6:00am amid growing chieftaincy disturbances in the two areas.
”Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument, has reviewed the Curfew hours on Karaga Township and its environs in the Karaga District of the Northern Region to 8:00 pm to 4: 00 effective Monday, April 20, 2026″.
The Interior Ministry in a statement dated Monday, April 20, urged the Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them.
The Minister further admonished the people to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace in the area.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Karaga and former Finance Minister, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam last week called on the government to consider reviewing the curfew hours or completely lifting it after assessing the situation.
The lawmaker in a statement dated April 16, noted the curfew was adversely affecting the people particularly traders who earn their livelihoods through night trading.
”I am confident that the security presence in the town will be sufficient to deter those who seek to foment trouble. I also appeal to the people to eschew activities that are likely to disturb the peace of the area and to direct their energies towards productive ventures to help alleviate the levels of deprivation in our communities” he added.
Meanwhile, the ban on all persons in the area from carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive objects/ weapons remain enforced.
The Ministry of Interior has cautioned that any person found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.
