Mr. Ambrose Dery and some Police chiefs at the Kantamanto fire scene

The Minister for the Interior, Mr Ambrose Dery, Yesterday visited the scene of the fire outbreak at the Kantamanto Market in Accra to commiserate with the affected traders on behalf of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The minister toured the scene with the Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare and other senior officers of the Ghana Police Service, to assess the extent of damage and also interact with the traders.

The Kantamanto Market situated in the central business district of Accra, was gutted by fire yesterday dawn and goods worth millions of cedis were destroyed.

The cause of the fire outbreak was not immediately known.

The Ghana National Fire Service, under the leadership of the chief fire officer, was also on the grounds to help with the operation.

Officers from the Service battled with the fire since dawn and were able to manage the blaze to prevent it from spreading further.

However, the fire officers complained about some difficulty in accessing the market.

Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) were also there to support the exercise.

Meanwhile, police officers were deployed to the scene to prevent possible looting and also direct the movement of persons and vehicles away from the scene of the fire.
