Sheffield United have completed the signing of experienced Ghana international Jordan Ayew on a free transfer, with the 34-year-old forward agreeing a one-year contract until the end of the 2026/27 season.
The deal was confirmed on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, and fills the final place in manager Chris Wilder’s 25-man Championship squad. Ayew had been a free agent since leaving Leicester City at the end of last season following the Foxes’ relegation to League One.
Ayew, who has won 124 caps for Ghana and captained the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, brings more than a decade of experience in English football. He previously played for Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City, amassing over 500 senior appearances across France and England.
Wilder welcomed the arrival, highlighting the player’s pedigree and versatility. “I spoke last week about being close to getting someone in from the free agent market, and things did move quite quickly, so I am really pleased to have Jordan with us,” the Sheffield United boss said.
“We’re talking about someone here with bags of experience from right at the top level of the game. Only a few months ago he was captaining Ghana in the World Cup, so he’s someone with real pedigree.
“He did well at this level last season in difficult circumstances and has played all across the front positions during his career, which gives us plenty of options. We used the free market to great effect last season, and we believe Jordan can come in and have an impact here just like Pat [Bamford] and Jaïro [Riedewald] did.”
Ayew expressed his delight at the move and the speed with which it was completed. Speaking after joining, he said: “I’m really, really pleased to be here. The manager and the club made a great effort to get me here as quick as possible, so I want to thank everyone for their support and for bringing me over to the Blades.
“It happened really, really quickly because I was in Ghana and the manager called me last week. I didn’t think twice; I just took the opportunity. It reminds me a bit of where I was a few years ago, and that was obviously Palace, so a bit similar. I really like it, and I’m really looking forward to the season and getting to know more about the club as well.
“I am just here to help the boys to have a great season and to be successful; that’s the most important thing, and obviously to make the fans happy and enjoy the season.”
The signing comes after Ayew had been linked with other Championship clubs, including Blackburn Rovers. He will reunite at Bramall Lane with former Leicester teammate Hamza Choudhury, who joined Sheffield United permanently towards the end of the transfer window.
Wilder will be hoping Ayew’s experience and ability to operate as a central striker or across the wide attacking positions can help improve the Blades’ start to the campaign, in which they have managed only one win from their opening five league matches.
For Ayew, the move offers a fresh opportunity to continue his career at a competitive level in England after a period without a club following Leicester’s relegation. The Ghana captain is expected to push for involvement in the coming weeks as Sheffield United look to climb the Championship table.
