Jorge Messi, the father of Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68. His death comes two months after the family publicly revealed that he had been hospitalised due to an ongoing health condition.
Jorge reportedly passed away at a hospital in Rosario, Argentina, near the family home, at approximately 10 p.m. local time on Friday, August 7. The news was first carried by Argentine media outlets and later confirmed by Newell’s Old Boys, the club where Lionel Messi began his football journey.
In a statement, Newell’s Old Boys described Jorge as a devoted supporter and the father of Argentina captain Lionel Messi. The club praised his significant role in his son’s development and career, noting that he provided steady support from the earliest stages.
“His constant companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership were essential in backing every step of Lionel, from his beginnings at Malvinas to the pinnacle of world football glory,” the club said.
Newell’s Old Boys extended its condolences to Lionel Messi, his mother Celia Cuccittini, his siblings Rodrigo, Matías and María Sol, and the wider family. The cause of Jorge’s death has not been made public.
Jorge Messi played a central role in his son’s professional life, serving as his agent and business manager. He oversaw many of Lionel’s career decisions and commercial interests for years.
Concerns about Jorge’s health first emerged earlier this year. Reports indicated that he suffered a medical episode at his home in January and was subsequently hospitalised. Lionel Messi himself alluded to family difficulties after an emotional appearance following Argentina’s World Cup match against Algeria. After scoring a hat-trick, he was asked about his visible emotions and replied:
“No, honestly it’s something completely unrelated to sports. It’s been a few difficult days, complicated.”
Argentine journalist Eduardo Feinmann later confirmed that Messi’s father had been dealing with health problems for several months.
South American football’s governing body, CONMEBOL, also issued a tribute:
“CONMEBOL deeply regrets the passing of Jorge Messi, father of Argentine footballer Lionel Messi. We accompany Lionel, his family, friends, and loved ones with respect and affection in this moment of profound grief. May he rest in peace.”
