Justin Frimpong Kodua has been re-elected General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), retaining one of the party’s most influential positions as it begins preparations for the 2028 general elections.
Kodua secured 4,486 votes in Saturday’s national executive elections held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, defeating three other candidates in the contest.
His closest challenger, former Ngleshie Amanfro Member of Parliament Sylvester Tetteh, polled 1,340 votes.
Eugene Boakye Antwi received 162 votes, while Dr Charles Dwamena secured 126 votes.
Kodua’s decisive victory allows him to retain the position he has held since 2022, as the NPP undertakes a major reorganisation following its defeat in the 2024 general election.
His re-election is expected to place him at the centre of the party’s efforts to strengthen its grassroots structures, improve internal organisation and coordinate its campaign preparations ahead of the next presidential and parliamentary elections.
The NPP’s National Delegates Conference brought together more than 7,000 delegates from across the country to elect nine national executive officers.
The elections were supervised by the Electoral Commission as the party sought to renew its national leadership and chart a new direction following its return to opposition.
Kodua will now work alongside the newly elected national executives, including National Chairman John Boadu, to steer the party’s organisational affairs and implement its strategy ahead of 2028.
His continued presence in the party’s leadership is also expected to provide some level of continuity as the NPP evaluates the factors that contributed to its 2024 electoral defeat and seeks to rebuild public confidence.
The leadership is expected to focus on strengthening party unity, mobilising supporters and expanding the NPP’s appeal as it positions itself for a return to power in the 2028 elections.
