Lawyer Justin Frimpong Kodua has officially declared his intention to seek re-election as General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He unveiled a campaign centred on organisational renewal, party unity and preparations to return the party to power in the 2028 general elections.
The incumbent General Secretary is seeking another mandate on the theme “Prepared. Well-Positioned. Focused. Rebuild.”, arguing that the NPP’s recovery must be driven by strong institutions, disciplined leadership and a revitalised grassroots structure.
His declaration comes as the party begins the process of electing a new national leadership following its defeat in the 2024 general elections, with attention increasingly turning to the leaders expected to spearhead its rebuilding efforts.
In his message to delegates, Justin Kodua presented his re-election bid as a continuation of reforms initiated during his first term rather than the pursuit of personal ambition.
Mr Kodua contended that rebuilding the NPP requires experienced leadership that understands both the challenges that contributed to the party’s electoral setback and the practical steps needed to restore it to government.
Central to his campaign is a commitment to strengthening the party’s organisational capacity from the polling station to the national headquarters. He maintains that electoral success is built on strong internal structures, effective administration and a united membership rather than campaign rhetoric alone.
Reflecting on his tenure, the General Secretary acknowledges serving in office during the party’s 2024 electoral defeat but argues that leadership should equally be assessed by the ability to preserve and strengthen institutions during difficult periods.
He points to a number of organisational reforms undertaken under his stewardship, describing them as a solid foundation upon which the party can rebuild.
Among the achievements highlighted are the successful conduct of what he describes as one of the largest, most peaceful and transparent internal elections in the party’s history, implementation of constitutional reforms arising from the recommendations of the Prof. Mike Oquaye Committee, establishment of statutory and sector committees to improve party administration, expansion of digital membership registration and efforts to develop a credible national membership database.
Mr Kodua also cited measures to strengthen internal administrative systems and improve coordination across the party’s structures, saying these reforms have positioned the NPP for a stronger future despite the challenges it has faced.
Looking ahead, Mr. Kodua is promising to prioritise transparent and credible internal elections, deepen grassroots mobilisation and complete the party’s digital membership register to enhance planning, mobilisation and election management.
He believes restoring confidence within the party will require fair internal processes, stronger constituency and polling station structures and disciplined leadership capable of bringing members together behind a common objective.
Unity also features prominently in his vision for the party’s future. According to him, organisational discipline and cohesion will be indispensable if the NPP is to reconnect with its support base and mount a successful campaign in the next general election.
Rather than framing the General Secretary election as a personal contest, he presents it as an opportunity for delegates to choose the leadership best equipped to organise, reform and prepare the party for victory in 2028.
Political observers say the race for General Secretary is expected to be one of the most significant contests at the party’s upcoming national delegates conference, given the strategic role the office plays in coordinating the affairs of the NPP and implementing decisions of its national leadership.
With his declaration, Justin Kodua has become one of the first leading national officers to formally set out his vision for the party’s future, placing organisational reform, accountability and institutional strength at the centre of his campaign.
As delegates prepare to choose the party’s next national executives, his message is that the road back to government begins with a prepared leadership, a focused organisation and a determined effort to rebuild the NPP from the grassroots upward.
