Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has been elected National Women’s Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Koomson secured 783 votes at the party’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, defeating her main contender, Hajia Safia Mohammed, who polled 429 votes.
Her victory marks a return to a prominent national leadership position within the NPP after she lost the Awutu Senya East parliamentary seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor in the 2024 general election.
Koomson first entered Parliament in 2012 and successfully retained the Awutu Senya East seat in the 2016 and 2020 elections. During her time in Parliament, she also served in the Akufo-Addo administration.
She was initially appointed Minister for Special Development Initiatives before becoming Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development in 2021, a position she held until the end of the administration.
Her election as National Women’s Organiser places her at the helm of the NPP’s women’s wing at a critical period as the party undertakes a reorganisation following its defeat in the 2024 general election.
The new leadership is expected to play a key role in rebuilding the party’s grassroots structures and strengthening its support base ahead of the 2028 general elections.
A total of 7,163 delegates were accredited for the NPP’s National Delegates Conference, while 1,275 delegates were eligible to vote in the National Women’s Organiser contest.
The Ashanti Region recorded the highest number of accredited delegates with 1,122, followed by the Greater Accra Region with 773 and the Eastern Region with 732.
Koomson’s election is part of a broader reshaping of the NPP’s national leadership as the party seeks to reposition itself, reconnect with its grassroots supporters and prepare for the next general election.
Her experience in Parliament, government and party politics is expected to be brought to bear as she leads efforts to mobilise and empower women across the NPP in the period ahead.
