Delegates of the New Patriotic Party in the Kumbungu Constituency have unanimously endorsed the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, Hon Salam Hamza Fatawu, as the 2024 parliamentary candidate of the party.

Mr. Fatawu emerged as the only individual who picked nominations when the party opened the process in July this year and stood unopposed in the contest. Accordingly, the party on Thursday, October 5, 2023, held its delegates conference to acclaim him as the parliamentary candidate for the 2024 general elections.

The Kumbungu District Director of the Electoral Commission, Madam Fasilatu Fuseini, conducted a voice vote and duly declared him as the elected Parliamentary Candidate in line with Article 50(3) of the 1992 constitution.

He subsequently took the oath of office administered by the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Mr. Haruna Mohammed.

In an exclusive interview, the Member of Parliament hopeful said no candidate has gone unopposed in the history of the NPP in the Kumbungu constituency and therefore described as unprecedented.

He said going unopposed is significant milestone that would help the party to easily and quickly organize and face the National Democratic Congress in next year’s polls.

He admitted the narrative wouldn’t have been the same if there were to be an election to choose a candidate as it happened in 2019 when several candidates contested.

“…This is very significant and it is going to enhance our unity and with unity nothing can stand between us and victory” he stressed.

Mr. Hamza Fatawu indicated the Kumbungu seat is now within the grips of the governing NPP following the remarkable votes the party obtained in the 2020 polls.

“In 2016, the candidate then got over fire thousand votes and in 2020 [four years later], I moved our votes to over eighteen thousand and that is a remarkable improvement” he revealed.

The MP hopeful lamented the internal wrangle and disunity within the rank and file of the party in the aftermath of the 2019 primaries affected his chances of winning the seat for the NPP.

“I thank God that I am still alive, I thank God that I have a vibrant and well condition party structures behind me and supporting me to get victory for our dear party for the first time in the history of the Kumbungu constituency” he asserted.

Meanwhile, the NPP Deputy General Secretay, Haruna Mohammed a.k.a Prof Haruna in his address stated the party will win the 2024 polls and called on the party faithful to rally support behind the Parliamentary Candidate and the soon to be elected 2024 Presidential Candidate who will succeed President Nana Akufo-Addo.
