The Africa Institute on Governance and Security (AIGS) has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his visionary appointment of Kojo Choi as Ghana’s Ambassador-Designate to the Republic of South Korea.
This strategic decision, the Africa Institute said, exemplifies a bold and progressive approach to global diplomacy, reflecting Ghana’s commitment to fostering innovative and inclusive international relations.
Kojo Choi, a Ghanaian of Korean descent and a distinguished fintech entrepreneur, embodies the bridge between African and Asian cultures, economies, and aspirations.
In a statement issued by Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, Governance Specialist and Security Strategist, said Kojo’s appointment underscores President Mahama’s recognition of the evolving nature of global diplomacy, where diversity, cross-cultural understanding, and expertise in emerging fields like technology and trade are critical to advancing national and continental interests.
He said “By selecting an individual with deep ties to both Ghana and South Korea, President Mahama has demonstrated a nuanced understanding of ‘soft power’ in geopolitics, leveraging shared heritage to strengthen bilateral ties and promote mutual prosperity.”
“This appointment aligns with the principles of good governance and strategic diplomacy championed by the AIGS. It reflects a forward-thinking approach to harnessing the African diaspora and dual-cultural identities to enhance Africa’s role in the global arena,” he stated.
Boakye-Danquah indicated that Choi’s expertise in digital finance and his lived experience in both Ghana and South Korea position him uniquely to advance Ghana’s interests under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), fostering partnerships in technology, smart agriculture, green energy, and artificial intelligence—sectors critical to Africa’s sustainable development.
The AIGS applauded President Mahama for this diplomatic masterstroke, which not only strengthens Ghana-South Korea relations but also sets a precedent for inclusive and innovative diplomacy across Africa.
Boakye-Danquah said Ghanaians are confident that Choi’s tenure will deepen cooperation, enhance economic integration, and elevate Ghana’s standing as a leader in global diplomacy and serve as a model for other African nations, highlighting the transformative potential of embracing the global dimensions of diplomacy in a rapidly changing world.
