President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to develop a 60-hectare irrigation facility aimed at strengthening year-round tomato production and reducing post-harvest losses in the agricultural sector.
The project will also include storage and processing facilities, a move intended to help stabilise supply and curb seasonal gluts that frequently lead to major losses for farmers.
The irrigation project will provide farmers with a reliable and consistent water supply, enabling year-round cultivation of tomatoes regardless of seasonal rainfall patterns. This is expected to help stabilise tomato prices in local markets while also improving yields and quality of produce.
Speaking at the Kwahu Business Forum, Mahama emphasised the importance of investing in modern agricultural infrastructure.
He noted that projects like this are crucial in empowering farmers, creating employment opportunities, and boosting the country’s economy through agribusiness.
He reaffirmed that agriculture and agribusiness remain central to his administration’s development agenda.
