President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
The two nominees are scheduled to be sworn into office this afternoon, formally assuming their new responsibilities and completing the commission’s top leadership structure.
Ms Agbenyo currently serves as Deputy Director for Operations at the Ghana TVET Service.
Her administrative background in technical and vocational education and training is expected to bring operational insight and organisational discipline to the commission’s work. Dr Asamoah, a law lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, previously held several senior positions within the Electoral Commission itself.
He served as Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit. These roles have given him direct experience of the commission’s financial systems, staff development programmes and internal control mechanisms.
The appointments follow the recent departure of two former deputy chairpersons. Dr Bossman Asare resigned as head of Corporate Affairs with effect from 31 July 2026, while Samuel Tettey stepped down from the Operations portfolio upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.
Their exits created vacancies that needed to be filled promptly to maintain institutional continuity and effectiveness.
By selecting individuals with proven administrative, financial and operational expertise, the President has moved to restore the Electoral Commission to its full complement of leadership.
The new deputy chairpersons will work alongside the Chairperson to oversee electoral processes, strengthen internal governance and uphold public confidence in the integrity of Ghana’s democratic institutions. Their formal induction this afternoon marks an important step in ensuring the commission remains fully functional and prepared for its constitutional mandate.
