President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn in an eight-member Constitution Review Committee tasked with assessing and proposing amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
The committee, composed of legal and governance experts, will focus on identifying key areas of the Constitution that need updating to align with the country’s evolving democratic and socio-economic realities.
Members of the committee include Prof. H Kwasi Prempeh as Chairman with Justice Sophia Adinyirah, Prof. Kwame Karikari, former EC chairperson Mrs Charlotte Osei, Dr Godwin Djokoto, Ibrahim Tanko Amidu, Dr Esi Ansah as members and Dr Rainer Akumperigeya as Secretary to the committee.
Their mandate involves reviewing past recommendations, engaging relevant stakeholders, and suggesting reforms to strengthen Ghana’s governance system.
Mahama’s assurance

President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to constitutional reforms, assuring the newly established Constitution Review Committee that their work will not be in vain.
He said that this initiative would not become another unfulfilled reform effort but rather a turning point in Ghana’s governance.
President Mahama charged the committee to carefully examine past recommendations, identify necessary changes, and develop a clear roadmap for meaningful constitutional amendments.
He stressed that this process must lead to action rather than remain another chapter in Ghana’s history of stalled reforms.
“The task before you is critical. You are not just reviewing reports and proposing amendments; you are helping to shape the future of our dear nation, Ghana. Your mandate is to carefully examine past recommendations, identify necessary changes, and create a clear roadmap that will lead to meaningful constitutional amendments.
“This process must not become another chapter in the history of unfulfilled reform efforts. It must be a turning point where Ghana moves decisively from discussions to actions.
“Understand the weight of responsibility that comes with this task, and I assure you that your work will not be in vain. This will not be an exercise in futility. We are determined to see this process through and have every confidence in your ability to deliver results that will serve both present and future generations of Ghanaians,” President Mahama declared.
He also expressed confidence in the committee’s composition, noting that members were selected based on integrity, expertise, and commitment to Ghana’s progress, rather than political considerations.
Additionally, he urged them to engage widely with citizens, ensuring that the revised constitution reflects the values, hopes, and dreams of all Ghanaians.
The committee is expected to present its recommendations with six months to the Government for consideration.
