The Minority in Parliament has mounted pressure on President John Mahama, demanding the immediate suspension of Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD), following a widely circulated video.
The footage allegedly shows Mr. Gyamfi handing over a sum of U.S. dollars to evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, also known as Nana Agradaa, a gesture that has ignited significant public criticism.
Addressing a press conference in Accra on Monday, May 12, 2025, Dr. Kabiru Tia Mahama, the Member of Parliament for Walewale and a member of the Finance Committee, called for swift and decisive action from the President regarding his appointee.
“The minority is calling for the immediate suspension of Sammy Gyamfi as acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board. This goes against the recently launched Code of Conduct for state officers, an event which was presided over by the Head of State himself. Furthermore, we believe this action violates the Forex Exchange Act and the Currency Act,” Dr. Mahama stated emphatically.
Dr. Mahama, highlighting Mr. Gyamfi’s professional standing, asserted that the acting CEO, being a lawyer of high repute, could not claim ignorance of the laws of the land. “The Chief of Staff himself mentioned that ignorance of the law is not an excuse, and Sammy Gyamfi is not ignorant of the law. He’s a lawyer of repute and understands clearly the action and the consequences of the action. So, he ought to take responsibility for the same,” the MP added.
Beyond the demand for immediate suspension, the Minority is also calling for a comprehensive investigation into the origin of the U.S. dollars that were seen in the viral video. Dr. Mahama questioned the legality and source of the funds, emphasizing the difficulties ordinary Ghanaians face in accessing foreign currency. “Where did he get the dollars? An ordinary Ghanaian cannot go to the bank and request them, even if you have a dollar account. You must demonstrate a transaction and show that you are travelling out of the country in order for them to even allow you to have access to your own dollar account. So, we need a full-scale investigation into the source of the dollar bundle displayed in that viral video,” he demanded.
The controversy has prompted a response from the President’s office, with Chief of Staff Julius Debrah summoning Sammy Gyamfi to explain the circumstances surrounding the donation to Nana Agradaa. However, the Minority believes further action is required.
In a direct appeal to the President, Dr. Mahama also called for a public apology to the citizens of Ghana.
“We expect an apology from the President to the good people of Ghana for the insult this act represents to those suffering under the current harsh economy,” the Walewale MP concluded.
The Minority’s stance indicates a determined effort to hold the acting GOLDBOD CEO accountable for his actions and to ensure the integrity of public office.
