MobileMoney FinTech Limited (MMF) has intensified efforts to accelerate Ghana’s transition to a cashless economy with the rollout of its “Ride with MoMo” initiative, a nationwide campaign designed to encourage commercial transport operators to adopt secure digital fare payments while rewarding them with cash, fuel, data and vehicle maintenance incentives.
The initiative, which was launched in Ho in the Volta Region after its national unveiling in Accra on July 16, 2026, is being implemented in partnership with the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS).
It targets commercial tricycle operators (popularly known as Pragya or Keke riders), taxi drivers, ride-hailing operators and haulage operators.
The campaign seeks to deepen digital financial inclusion by encouraging commercial drivers to receive fares through Mobile Money Merchant accounts instead of cash, improving convenience, security and financial management.
Promoting a cashless transport ecosystem
Under the initiative, commercial drivers who register as MoMo merchants will receive digital payment tools that allow passengers to pay electronically through Mobile Money wallets or by scanning QR codes.
The programme is expected to reduce the transport sector’s dependence on cash while addressing common operational challenges faced by drivers, including the constant search for change, exposure to counterfeit currency, cash theft and payment disputes.
Beyond enhancing convenience, the digital payment platform enables drivers to maintain electronic records of their daily transactions, helping them better monitor their earnings and improve financial planning.
Reward package for commercial drivers
To encourage adoption, MMFL has introduced a three-month promotional campaign offering attractive incentives to participating drivers.
Drivers who register as MoMo merchants will accumulate reward points that can be redeemed for fuel and vehicle maintenance vouchers, while consistent users will continue earning additional points.
Outstanding performers will also benefit from vehicle upgrade packages.
In addition, drivers who complete at least 20 merchant transactions worth GH¢1,000 or more within a week will receive 1GB of mobile data.
The top 10 performing drivers in each region every week will each receive GH¢500 and 1GB of data, while monthly winners will take home GH¢1,000.
The incentive scheme is expected to encourage wider adoption of digital payments among commercial transport operators across the country.
Eliminating challenges associated with cash
Speaking at the launch, the Senior Manager for Business Development at MobileMoney Limited, Mr Abdul-Majeed Rufai, said the initiative was developed after recognising the daily challenges drivers encounter when handling cash.
He noted that many commercial drivers spend valuable working hours searching for change, reconciling handwritten records, safeguarding cash collections and dealing with counterfeit currency.
According to him, digital payments eliminate these difficulties while improving efficiency.
“There is no need to worry about change or counterfeit notes. Every payment comes with an SMS notification, making it easy to track your income and manage your business,” he said.
Mr Rufai explained that registering as a MoMo merchant requires only a Ghana Card, after which drivers are onboarded and provided with branded merchant materials to facilitate transactions.
He encouraged drivers who could not register during the launch to visit any MTN service centre to complete the registration process.
Supporting financial inclusion
Senior Manager for General Trade South East at MTN Ghana, Mr Peter Bimpeh, described commercial transport operators as an indispensable part of Ghana’s transport and economic system.
He said the initiative would provide drivers with a faster, safer and more reliable payment platform while strengthening financial inclusion.
“People who keep Ghana moving deserve payment solutions that are equally efficient, secure and reliable,” he stated.
Mr Bimpeh explained that the programme reflects the collaboration between MTN Ghana, MMFL, GhIPSS, the Mahama Cando Association and other stakeholders working together to expand access to digital financial services.
He urged transport operators nationwide to embrace digital payments by registering as MoMo merchants.
Drivers welcome initiative
Commercial tricycle operators have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant intervention that addresses many of the operational challenges associated with cash transactions.
Chairman of the UHAS Keke Riders Association, Mr Victor Adzah, commended MobileMoney FinTech Limited for introducing the programme.
He said receiving fares electronically had improved his personal savings habits because funds stored in a Mobile Money wallet were less likely to be spent impulsively.
“When the money comes into the MoMo wallet, you think twice before spending it. It has helped me save more than when I handled cash,” he said.
Mr Adzah added that the initiative has eliminated one of the biggest frustrations faced by commercial drivers—passengers presenting large denomination notes when drivers have little or no change.
According to him, passengers can now simply scan a QR code or transfer money directly to a driver’s Mobile Money account, making transactions quicker, safer and more convenient for both parties.
He appealed to MTN Ghana and MMFL to sustain the programme and continue introducing innovative digital financial solutions that improve the livelihoods of commercial transport operators across the country.
Advancing Ghana’s digital economy
The “Ride with MoMo” campaign forms part of MMFL’s broader strategy to deepen Ghana’s digital payments ecosystem by extending cashless transactions beyond traditional retail outlets into the transport sector.
By combining secure electronic payments with financial incentives and digital record-keeping, the initiative is expected to increase the adoption of Mobile Money Merchant services, strengthen financial inclusion and accelerate Ghana’s transition towards a modern, cash-lite economy.
