The Government of Ghana has received a significant donation of 2,000 metric tonnes of fertilizer from the Kingdom of Morocco to support the country’s agricultural sector. The consignment was officially handed over at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Accra.
The support forms part of efforts to accelerate the government’s flagship Feed Ghana Programme, under the broader Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA), which seeks to enhance food security, create jobs, and strengthen agro-industrial linkages.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, described the gesture as a testament to the enduring diplomatic and development cooperation between Ghana and Morocco.
The Minister indicated that the fertilizer donation follows his working visit to Morocco in June, where key agreements were reached to deepen bilateral relations, particularly in agriculture, education, and visa facilitation.
“This donation is not just symbolic; it reflects the real impact diplomacy can make. This is a golden era for Ghana Morocco relations.” Mr. Ablakwa said.
The Foreign Affairs Minister further disclosed that discussions are underway for the establishment of a fertilizer production plant in Ghana through a partnership between Ghanaian and Moroccan institutions.
“This is It is in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s directive that all foreign engagements should bring tangible benefits to the Ghanaian people. You’ve heard President Mahama say time without number that agriculture is his priority. He wants us to be able to attain food security and be resilient when it comes to food production” Mr. Ablakwa added.
Morocco’s Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Imane Ouaadil, who officially handed over the donation, expressed hope that the fertilizer will help Ghanaian farmers increase crop yields and contribute meaningfully to the country’s food security objectives.
She highlighted the gesture as part of a broader South-South cooperation framework championed by King Mohammed VI of Morocco.
“This fertilizer donation is another demonstration of Morocco’s goodwill and commitment to deepening our collaboration with Ghana. It follows earlier agreements reached during Minister Ablakwa’s visit to Morocco and reflects our shared vision of solidarity and mutual growth,” Ambassador Ouaadil stated.
Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, expressed profound gratitude to the Moroccan government for what he described as a timely and strategic intervention. He reiterated Ghana’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Morocco in key areas such as seed commercialization, irrigation development, fertilizer production, and agricultural knowledge exchange.
“Unfortunately, many of our smallholder farmers still face challenges in acquiring sufficient and affordable fertilizer inputs. This donation of 2,000 metric tonnes of fertilizer will therefore go a long way in addressing this gap, particularly at a time when government is scaling up the distribution of inputs to priority production zones across the country.” Mr Dumelo said
Mr Dumelo gave the assurance that the fertilizer would be distributed transparently under the Feed Ghana Programme to reach the intended beneficiaries, the hardworking farmers across the country.
“Farmers are at the heart of our agricultural transformation, and this donation is a strong boost to their productivity and resilience. We thank all partners for making this initiative a reality,” Mr Dumelo said.
The delivery of this fertilizer marks a tangible step forward in Ghana’s efforts to modernize its agricultural sector and enhance food production, reinforcing the vital role of international cooperation in achieving national development goals.
