The former National Coordinator of the governing New Patriotic Party Nasara wing, Kamal-deen Abdulai has lashed out his colleague politicians who donate sugar and rice to Muslims in the country for the Ramadan ritual and flood the social media and traditional media with pictures of the items.

He said the Muslim Ummah (populace) in Ghana deserve some dignity and respect from individuals who extend a helping hand to them but not to demean them with the rice and sugar politics and its display on Facebook and other mainstream media platforms.

During the Ramadan holy month, sugar and rice are the highly patronize items in the country and politicians, philanthropists and individuals distribute thousands of bags of the food commodities within the period.

“To me in all humility is demeaning and lowers us as Muslims. No wonder some hold the view that, as for Muslims, just wait until is Ramadan or Sallah and get them some few bags of sugar and rice and you are good to go as a politician. Sad!

Kamal-deen Abdulai on his personal timeline on Facebook Sunday (2 May, 2021) said the teachings of Islam enjoin people to support the needy with food items and cash particularly in this holy month for same to use to observe the ritual.

“But, I have strongly come to the realisation that the people we target with those items during these times may not be the right people and what is more disturbing is that, it’s gradually becoming a political show off thing which I doubt if Allah accepts what clearly could be described as ‘Riya’.

Let no one say I’m against saddaqat (Alms giving), but let’s do it with some respect and dignity as directed by the teachings of our respected religion (Islam).

We are all to blame for encouraging such acts as politicians but honestly I think all Muslims must rise up against this degrading practice!

However, the former parliamentary aspirant of the NPP in the Nanton constituency in the northern region intimated these resources could’ve been channeled to provide school blocks, health facilities, good road network, and warehouse facilities among others to serve the underserved communities.

“I have chosen to embark on two major projects on my own through my connections which insha Allah we shall visibly see by the end of this year and I pray other politicians in my constituency will or are already on the provision of some of these developmental facilities for the betterment of our people” he revealed.
