NPP's Director of International Affairs Mr. Emmanuel Attafuah-Danso (R) monitoring the voter registration exercise in Northern Region

Director of International Affairs for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Mr. Emmanuel Attafuah-Danso has commended the party’s northern regional executives for effectively policing the ongoing mass voter registration exercise ahead of this year’s general election.

According to him, the ongoing voter registration exercise is very critical as it will inform the country’s next democratic trajectory beyond the 2020 presidential and parliamentary polls.

Having monitored the process with the NPP Regional Secretary, Alhaji Sibdow in the Tolon, Sagnarigu, Tamale Central, Tamale South and Tamale North constituencies last Friday, Mr. Attafuah-Danso said he was impressed with the vigilance of the NPP Executives.

NDC agent arrested

The vigilance of the NPP paid off last week when the Regional Chairman, Mohammed Baantima Samba together with his executives apprehended an agent of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Sagnarigu with copies of the Electoral Commission’s Form 1A in his possession and allegedly endorsed them.

Consequent to that, Mr. Attafuah-Danso who is the NPP National Agent responsible for the monitoring of the exercise in the northern region further applauded the polling station to constituency and regional officers of the party for their loyalty to the party and for attaching such seriousness to the electoral activity.

He also believed the excitement and enthusiasm demonstrated by the citizenry in the process shows that Ghanaians have come to appreciate that democracy has come to stay in Ghana, admitting though the nation is not in normal times.

He argued that the high turnout has defeated the position of the NDC prior to the commencement of the exercise.

“Some people thought that the time we have for our self and the COVID-19 crisis and observing the protocols, we couldn’t do it; Ghanaians think that democracy has come to stay and a very important thing that we need to use to get our self-leadership at all levels”, he emphasized.

Electoral malpractice

The NPP Director of International Affairs reiterated the position of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that the party will never engage in any electoral malpractice to favour the Busia/Dankwa/Dombo tradition.

The President in his address of the nation before the EC started the exercise said he is not interested in rigged electoral process that would enable him to win the 2020 elections.

Consequently, Mr. Emmanuel Attafuah-Danso stated the party has built the capacity of their agents to diligently discharge their duties, indicating, “For them they know the best practices and they will not compromise to do anything that will be harmful and damaging to the political party”.
