Constituency executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Kusaug Traditional Area have condemned what they describe as a “state-sponsored assault” on civilians and traditional authority in Bawku.
The group, made up of representatives from Binduri, Bawku Central, Pusiga, Tempane and Zebilla, addressed a press conference on Tuesday, July 15, expressing outrage over the July 13 attack.
According to the executives, the assault, allegedly carried out by individuals of Mamprusi origin with military escort, included the burning of the statue of the Bawku Naba—an act they described as a direct attack on the soul of Kusaug tradition.
“The people of Kusaug woke up to what can only be described as a state-sponsored assault—not only on civilians but on the very soul and authority of our traditional leadership,” they stated.
The NDC leaders acknowledged the complex nature of the Bawku conflict but rejected what they termed indiscriminate violence by state forces.
“We do not condone any violence, but no civilised or lawful state responds by attacking innocent women and schoolchildren in various schools and injuring two of them. This is not law enforcement—it is state terrorism,” they declared.
They warned that tensions in the area were reaching breaking point. “Let it be known that the Kusaug people have reached their limit,” they cautioned, calling on the government to uphold justice and accountability.
