The Overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, has accused the state security personnel providing escort services for commuters traveling into Bawku and those traveling outside the area of unfair treatment.
According to the Nayiri, security escort services are being provided to one side, thus the Kusasis, specifically along the Bolgatanga–Walewale–Tamale route, while similar protection is not extended to Mamprusis traveling along the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmako highway.
“As a peace-loving King, I have always upheld the values of fairness, justice, and coexistence. Following your last visit and your plea to me, I made a heartfelt appeal to my sons and daughters both Mamprusis and Kusasis to lay down their differences and give peace a chance. I did so with the strong conviction that, together with the Asantehene and your leadership, we could find a path toward lasting peace in Bawku.
“However, Your Excellency, it is with deep sadness and growing concern that I have observed a development that threatens to undermine the progress made so far. I have learned that security escort services are being provided to one side thus the Kusasis specifically along the Bolgatanga–Walewale–Tamale route, while similar protection is not extended to Mamprusis traveling along the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmako highway” he stated.
He added, “This apparent imbalance in the treatment of citizens is not only disheartening, but it also risks derailing the delicate peace efforts we have all been working so hard to sustain.”
Naa Bohagu made these remarks in a speech presented on his behalf during a courtesy visit of President John Mahama to Nalerigu on Friday, June 13, 2025, as part of his nationwide “Thank you” tour.
He therefore urged the government to take swift and decisive action to address this matter, and ensure that equal protection and security are guaranteed for all parties involved, without discrimination, arguing that fairness in security deployment is crucial to maintaining the integrity and trust in the ongoing mediation process.
The Mamprugu King called on the government to come out with a clear and transparent communication from the relevant agencies (e.g., Regional Coordinating Council, Ghana Police Service, National Security), give long-term plan for free movement of good and service as well as an immediate deployment of security escorts for stranded trucks on the Bawku corridor.
