Opposition National Democratic Congress NDC) has made sweeping changes in the leadership of Parliament in a revolutionary style that is likely to spark serious confusion in the party.

Some NDC lawmakers who are extremely furious about the move have already described the action as a “coup d’état”.

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South Haruna Iddrisu has been replaced by the Ranking Member of the Finance Committee and MP for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam Constituency in the Central Region, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

His Deputy James Klutse Avedzi who is also the MP for Ketu North has been replaced by Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, MP for Ellembelle constituency in the Western Region.

Minority Chief Whip and MP for Asawase in the Ashanti region, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka who spearheaded the election of NDC Speaker of Parliament on 7th January, 2021 has also been ousted.

MP for Adaklu Kwame Governs Agbodza replaced the Asawase MP as the Minority Chief Whip.

However, Ahmed Ibrahim and Comfort Doyo-Ghansah have been maintained as First and Second Deputy Whips respectively.

The removal of the minority leadership is said to be causing serious uproar within the main opposition party even though it is yet to be seen how loyal supporters of the ousted leaders will react publicly in the coming days.

In a statement signed by NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey, said, “The new leadership would be charged to recommend consequential changes in the Ranking membership to Headquarters of the party for approval”.

The NDC has fallen short of explaining the rationale behind the massive changes and this has generated speculations that the move has been intended to kick out perceived anti-Mahama elements in the parliamentary leadership.

It would be recalled that then NDC General Secretary and now National Chairman of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah in March 2021 hinted that the party was considering making changes to its leadership in parliament.

NDC supporters angry

Meanwhile, NDC supporters yesterday massed up at the party’s office in the Tamale South Constituency, to protest the removal of Mr. Haruna Iddrisu as Minority Leader.

The constituents are calling on the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party to rescind its decision.

According to them, they would advise themselves if the party fails to act on their request.
