The NDC Northern Regional Vice Chairman - Alhaji Rufai Vellim

Alhaji Alhassan Rufai Vellim, a Northern Regional Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been granted police enquiry bail by the Northern Regional Police Command.

He was arrested on Tuesday (August 23, 2022) for his alleged involvement in the broad day shooting incident and ransacking of the NDC Regional Office in Tamale earlier in the day.

THE CUSTODIAN has also gathered that police personnel were deployed in search for offensive weapons at his private residence as part their investigations into the matter. However, a source in the NDC has said nothing was found.

The source clarified that the NDC Vice Chairman was invited for interrogation contrary to rumors that he was picked up.

The irate youth vandalized properties of the party and fired gunshots indiscriminately to protest the appointment of Mr. Ali Adolf as the acting Regional Chairman following the sudden death of Chairman Ibrahim Mobila.

The NDC Northern Regional Secretary, Mohammed Abdul Salam justified the appointment was done in accordance with relevant provisions of the party’s constitution.

According to him, the decision was taken after the Functional Executive Committee met last Wednesday (August 18, 2022) in line articles 52 and 53 of the constitution.

The former Saboba District Chief Executive per the mandate given to him is supposed to be in the acting capacity until the NDC goes to elect new leadership for the party later this year.

Nonetheless, the angry youth said they are not ready any day to work with anyone short of Alhaji Alhassan Rufai Vellim.

They have also threatened to deal with the Secretary and any other regional executive who will force Ali Adolf on them as the acting Chairman.
