The Northern Regional office of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has significantly moved up on the national league table as a result of their impressive performance for NHIS membership mobilization for 2023. The year saw the region recording significant growth in membership coverage.
The membership coverage of the region stood at 46.3% of the regional population, the Regional Operations Manager, Mr. Hamza Salifu disclosed this at the 2023 End of Year Performance Review last Wednesday, May 8, 2024, in Tamale.
“It is a pleasure to welcome you All and to present the annual report of the performance of the Northern Region for the year ending 2023. The year was an exciting one which marks the 20th anniversary of continues provision of care to all subscribers of the NHIS. The region took part in some of the activities to mark the two decades of operations of the NHIS in the region” he said.
2023 target
Mr. Hamza stated that the region recorded a total of 278,677 of the poor as against a target of 243,353 representing a 114.5% of the target set for the year. Thus, the region exceeded its registration target of the poor and vulnerable by 14.4%.
The Operations Manager indicated that the Northern region for the year under review enjoyed a peaceful industrial atmosphere throughout the period.
“With determination and strong willpower, the region performed well in most of the key performance indicators. Total active membership at the end of the period was 1,086,922. This figure, which represents 91.3% of the regional annual active membership target of 1,191,139, moved the region from the 14th position in 2022 to the 4th Position in the national league table of the NHIS membership mobilization. The number of active members in the region grew by 5.4%, from 1,031,307 in the year 2022 to 1,086,922 in the year 2023” he announced.
Stakeholders Engagement
Mr. Hamza Salifu said the NHIS continued with their engagement with stakeholders to foster the existing cordial working relations. He added the regional office also seized numerous opportunities to educate the populace and respond to issues raised on the activities of the scheme at both governmental and nongovernmental functions.
