The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John has commended management of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund also known as MahamaCares for engaging critical stakeholders in the health sector and the general public to discuss the implementation of the intervention.
Mr. Adolf said the Mahama led administration recognizes that universal health coverage requires an integrated system that combines prevention, early detection, routine treatment, health insurance and access to specialised care.
He noted the policy therefore forms part of the broader healthcare agenda of the Government of Ghana under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.
”I therefore commend the management of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund for organizing this forum with the bid to deepen our understanding of the Fund, discuss its implementation, identify challenges and strengthen the partnerships necessary to make it effective” he stated.
In an address during a stakeholder engagement forum held in Tamale last , Mr. Adolf said his was optimistic that the deliberations will produce practical recommendations that will translate into improved healthcare access and better outcomes for the people of the Northern Region and Ghana as a whole.
“We are all aware that the National Health Insurance Scheme has played a significant role in expanding access to healthcare. However, the treatment of certain chronic and non-communicable diseases often involves expensive specialist consultations, advanced diagnostic procedures, prolonged treatment and costly medicines that may not be fully covered by existing insurance arrangements” he stated.
He added the establishment of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund therefore represents an important intervention in Ghana’s continuing efforts to make healthcare more accessible, equitable and financially sustainable.
”It is important to note that, for many families, a diagnosis of cancer, serious heart disease, kidney failure or stroke can become the beginning of severe financial hardship.
“Some households are compelled to sell valuable assets, exhaust their savings or borrow money to finance treatment. Others delay seeking care because they cannot afford the associated costs” the Minister emphasized.
Mr. Ali Adolf further intimated the Northern Region stands to benefit significantly from the effective implementation of the policy.
He highlighted the challenges families face in accessing specialised medical care, stressing the cost of transportation to referral facilities, diagnostic investigations, medicines and prolonged treatment can place considerable pressure on household incomes.
He observed these difficulties may be particularly severe for people in rural and hard-to-reach communities, where access to specialist services is limited.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund is undertaking the nationwide engagements to deepen stakeholder understanding of the Fund’s mandate, strengthen regional partnerships, receive feedback from key actors, and ensure effective coordination of the Fund’s programmes and interventions across the country.
