Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have approved an amendment to the party’s constitution to make its elected flagbearer the leader of the party.
The amendment was approved through an oral vote at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference held in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
The proposal, identified as Motion Number 10, seeks to amend Articles 10, 4, 1 and 13 of the party’s constitution to establish a leadership structure under which the party’s elected presidential candidate assumes the role of leader.
Under the approved amendment, when the NPP has an elected presidential candidate, that candidate shall serve as the leader of the party.
The delegates also approved a related amendment to clarify who leads the party when the NPP is in government.
According to the new provision, the President of the Republic shall be the leader of the party when the NPP is in government, and will retain that position until a new presidential candidate is elected.
The changes are aimed at providing clearer constitutional guidelines on the leadership of the party under different political circumstances.
The amendment effectively distinguishes between the party’s leadership while it is in opposition and its leadership when it controls government.
When the party has an elected presidential candidate but is not in government, the presidential candidate will serve as the party’s leader. However, when the NPP forms the government, the sitting President will assume the leadership of the party until a new presidential candidate is elected.
The constitutional changes were among several proposals considered by delegates at the National Delegates Conference, where members deliberated on amendments to the party’s governing document.

The approval of Motion Number 10 gives formal constitutional recognition to the role of the elected presidential candidate in the party’s leadership structure.
The amendment is expected to guide the relationship between the party’s elected presidential candidate, its organisational structures and the government when the NPP is in power.
The decision also provides a defined transition in party leadership between presidential administrations, with the incumbent President remaining party leader while the NPP is in government until the election of a new presidential candidate.
The changes will now form part of the party’s amended constitutional provisions governing its leadership and internal organisation.
